Pay-as-you-go, token limits, and upgrades
Understand what happens when your org's tokens run out and our pay-as-you-go token billing
How does Pay-as-you-go work?
After your organization consumes all its monthly allocated tokens, you may use additional token through our Pay-as-you-go billing system. Pay-as-you-go allows you to use more tokens beyond your monthly allocated amount at the rate assoicated to your current plan. To set up pay-as-you-go, please see "Billing".
How much does pay-as-you-go token usage cost?
If your organization uses more tokens than your plan includes in a billing month, the extra tokens are billed pay-as-you-go at your plan's rate:
- Tree: $3 per 1,000 tokens
- Grove: $2 per 1,000 tokens
- Forest (Enterprise): customized
When will pay-as-you-go token charges be billed?
Pay-as-you-go usage is totaled over your billing month and billed on your next billing date (the same day your subscription renews).
Can Sapling (free) use pay-as-you-go for extra tokens?
No. Sapling doesn't support pay-as-you-go. If you need more tokens for Processed Data ingestion, upgrade to Tree or above.
What is a token limit?
A token limit is a monthly cap you set on how many tokens your organization is allowed to consume in a billing month (including any pay-as-you-go overage). It's the simplest way to control spend:
- Set it to your included monthly token pool if you want to prevent pay-as-you-go charges.
- Set it higher if you want ingestion to keep running beyond the included pool, but still cap the maximum bill.
When should I use pay-as-you-go instead of upgrading my plan?
Pay-as-you-go is best when your token needs are temporary or spiky—like an initial historical ingest, a one-off project, or an occasional month with unusually heavy document/media processing.
When should I upgrade my plan?
Upgrade when higher usage is the new normal. If you're going beyond your included tokens most months (for example, 3+ months in a row), a higher tier is usually more predictable than ongoing pay-as-you-go overage—especially as your team grows.
What happens if we hit our token limit?
Native Data syncing and Standard chat keep working normally. Processed Data ingestion and processing may pause until your tokens reset on the next billing cycle, your token limit is increased, or you upgrade your plan.
